If there is one distinctive that separates 21st-century perspectives on leadership from 20th-century ones, it is the shift from leadership as a role and title in a mechanistic structure to leadership as a representative of the character and commitment of people operating within a relationship-oriented network of relationships.
Celine Schillinger’s Dare To Un-Lead: The Art of Relational Leadership in a Fragmented World is one of the most insightful and thorough of these books to date. Her depth of understanding about leadership and the structure of organizations is rare, extraordinarily rare, in my opinion. The first section of her book is worth the price of it. There are so many touchpoints where I agree with her. Even more so, there are many places that should spark conversation across the spectrum of people who self-identify as leaders of organizations with those who do not and have lost faith in those same leaders.
I love the organization of the book because she elevates the greatness of the French values of her native land - Liberty - Equality - Fraternity - as reference points for understanding how leadership can be different in the future. I believe this is an essential book for anyone who cares about our world, its organizations, its communities, their families, and ultimately, their own connection to the future.
I am grateful to have the opportunity to chat with Celine, who I met years ago, and am glad to have reconnected for this interview. Please share it with your colleagues. Thank you for watching.
