It takes less than a lifetime for the world to change.
In 1981, I spent the summer in the NorthWest Frontier Province of Pakistan serving as a refugee worker. Draw a line from the Kyber Pass on the Afganistan border (above) to Lahore on the India border and much of what is north of that line we visited. It was an extraordinary summer. The status of women in Pakistan has changed a lot since I was there forty four years ago. Faizah Tasaway is one reason. Her work with women is remarkable. How we met is too.
It was a Tuesday morning about 8am here in the Eastern time zone of the US. A comment by Faizah showed up in my LinkedIn feed. Always curious about people, I looked up her profile and saw that she is involved in leadership development and STEM in Lahore. I reached out to her to connect. She immediately responded. By 9am I had sent her an invitation to be on the podcast. At 1pm, we were recording our conversation on Zoom and you can watch below.
This is a very common place happening today. The immediacy of interpersonal communication across cultures and time zones is one of the most remarkable outcomes of the digital revolution. Four decades ago I celebrated my birthday in a tiny village in the mountains of Pakistan where the only communication was by short-wave radio.
As you will see in our conversation, there is no gap in time. We are serving leaders in much the same way. I am honored to have had this conversation with a Pakistani woman who is a genuine leader of impact.
