The history of the institutional care of children in need is the story of government orphanages and faith-based homes for children. The story of the Black Mountain Home for Children, Youth, and Families begins in 1904 with the response of a pastor to seeing children abandoned by death and poverty.
Jimmy Harmon, president of Black Mountain Home, shares the history of the home and its mission today. As a long time volunteer, sometime consultant, and current member of the board of directors, I am glad that Jimmy tells the story of “The Continuum of Care” that defines how the “Home” as we call it serves children in need from birth into adulthood.
Whatever your perception of such “homes for children”, the range across the world is extensive from excellence to horrifyingly deficient. Black Mountain Home has raised the standard of service and collaboration with agencies that serve children and youth. Today, other communities that have a heart to care for kids, are looking to Black Mountain Home’s approach as a path forward in the future.
I know you will be encouraged and inspired by Jimmy Harmon’s telling of the story of caring for kids.
