I met Roman Pascale during a quick stop in Washington, D.C., to visit the new National World War I Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery, where my great-aunt Reezie’s remains are buried. After visiting the Memorial, which is across the street from the park near the White House, I looked for a place to get some refreshments.

I was directed to The Hamilton Hotel, a block away. When I entered the bar, I was greeted by Roman. As I was the first in the bar that day, I had his entire attention. We spent two hours in conversation about cocktails, football, and world travel.

He told me about his upcoming trip to South America and Europe. I told him, "Once you are traveling, let’s talk.” This is our first conversation as Roman travels. We plan for another conversation late in his journey or after it is completed.
