Neurodiversity is a term that has emerged to describe people who are different. Here’s how Harvard Medical School describes this way of being.
Neurodiversity describes the idea that people experience and interact with the world around them in many different ways; there is no one "right" way of thinking, learning, and behaving, and differences are not viewed as deficits.
The word neurodiversity refers to the diversity of all people, but it is often used in the context of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as well as other neurological or developmental conditions such as ADHD or learning disabilities.
I have known and interacted with people described as neurodiverse or neurodivergent all my life. In just the last month, I have realized that I am neurodiverse. For me, it has a similar connection to being polymathic or a neo-generalist. My perspective and awareness of the world is as a big picture rather than the more typical detail-oriented perspective.
For this reason, I was excited to meet and talk with Sarah Kernion, who was introduced to me by The Eddy Network guest, Mark McGrath. You’ll see why as we discuss neurodiversity, family, and the self.
