In 2021, I produced a series of short videos to be used by one of the groups in Africa that I had worked with during 2019-2020. The COVID pandemic forced the cancellation of two additional trips to the continent. I was asked to do the training virtually. I decided to produce these videos that could be shown at any time. We could then schedule Zoom calls for conversation.
What is Leadership?
In the first video, I ask the question, What is Leadership? It is an important question because the perception of leadership that is generally believed does not serve organizations well.
The leadership perspective of Circle of Impact is that:
all leadership begins with personal initiative
to create impact that makes a difference that matters.
Impact is a change that makes a difference that matters. In other words, intentions toward leadership mean nothing; only actions that create beneficial change characterize leadership.
The confusion is that leadership has been reduced to a theory of management instead of being a function of how we live our lives.
The implication is that every one of you reading these words and watching this video can function as a leader of the impact. It really is that simple.
The obstacles to leadership are the restrictions that organizational structures place on people. Not only does this reduce the capacity for leadership in an organization, but it is an intentional restriction on each person's potential to make a difference that matters.
The other videos in the series build upon this perspective. They are available to view on my YouTube channel. I will post a video with a comment each Friday.

The Leadership Six Series
Introduction to the Circle of Impact model of leadership
I love this statement Ed, encapsulates the need for an inner mindset shift to step into your agency to lead.
“The confusion is that leadership has been reduced to a theory of management instead of being a function of how we live our lives.”
Thank you so much Ed!
